كنت عند النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فأقبل أبو بكر وعمر رضي الله عنهما فقال : يا علي هذان سيدا كهول أهل الجنة وشبابها بعد النبيين والمرسلين

Ali bin abi Talib (RA) said: I was with the Prophet PBUH then Abu Bakr and Umar may Allah be pleased with them arrived so he PBUH told me: O Ali these two are the Masters of the elderly of the people of paradise and its youth after the Prophets and the messengers.

Other authentic narrations come with his addition: “O Ali do not tell them as long as they are alive“.
Sheikh al Albani commented on the Hadith, he said:
أبو بكر و عمر ، سيدا كهول أهل الجنة ، من الأولين و الآخرين

This Hadith was narrated by Ali bin abi Talib and Anas ibn Malik and Abu Juhaifah and Jabir bin Abdullah and Abu Sa’eed al khudri all through authentic SAHIH chains of transmission.

Note: Some scholars did not explain the word “Kuhoul” in the Hadith as “elderly” but they explained it as “Intelligent patient dependable leaders” and both explanations are sound.

Caliph Ali (RA) said: the best of this nation after its prophet PBUH is Abu Bakr may Allah be pleased with him then Umar may Allah be pleased with him and if you want I would name the third.
