Iran arrests Shia intellectual & Scholar for his ‘anti-Imamate’ article

Iranian regime arrested a Shia intellectual and scholar, Dr.Sayyed Ali Asghar Ghoravi, for his article about Imamate. In the article Dr.Ghoravi mentioned that leaders are appointed through Shura of the people not divinely. He discuses the verses that Shia use to prove the appointment of Ali (ra) and refutes them. His article angered many Ayatollahs who asked the government to punish him and shutdown the newspaper.

This is his wikipedia page:

He was arrested on Sunday in Isfahan and transferred to a prison in Tehran. Not only that but even the newspaper, Roznameh Bahar, that published his article has been forced to shutdown.

He studied in Iran and Lebanon and holds doctorate in Islamic philosophy.

His Article

I will translate some of his points – I haven’t read the article completely:

This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion. [Maida:3]

– The verses before and after shows that Allah (swt) gives the Prophet (saw) the responsibility to convey the message, nothing should stop him from doing his job and He shouldn’t worry about the opposition from the disbelievers. From the way and style of the verse it becomes clear that the “completion of favor” is the divine revelation (Quran) and Islam. Meaning, now that revelation has been conveyed to the people without any defects, the favor has been completed.

– If the verse “Convey that which we have revealed upon you” [Madia: 67] was about introducing Ali (as) for caliphate, Allah would have mentioned it clearly right here in the verse. Allah is wise.

– Ali (as) himself in Nahj al-Balagha emphasize that a political government comes through Bayah and vote. For example Amir al-Muminin says to Muawiah in letter 6 of Nahj al-Balagha:

Verily, the people who payed allegiance to Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman, have payed allegiance to me based on the same principles as the allegiance to them. So anyone who was present has no right to go against his pledge of allegiance, and anyone who was absent has no right to oppose it. And verily shura (consultation) is only the right of the Muhajirs and the Ansar. So if they decide upon a man and declare him their imam, then it is with the pleasure of Allah.

The words of Ali clearly shows that caliphate is not something divine, rather the political successors of the Prophet (saw) must be appointed through people.

– Ali (as) never talks about his divine appointment and his appointment by the Prophet (saw). Even when he wants to defend his right for caliphate, he emphasizes on his merits and his suitabilities and informs the people about these points so that they don’t make mistake in appointing their leader. In entire sermons of Nahjul Balagha “awareness and selection (of leader)” is so clear that it leaves no doubt what opinion of Ali (as) was about a government.

– The behavior of Ali (as) towards the three caliphs especially Abubakr and Omar, as mentioned in many history books, clearly shows that he didn’t consider them to be people who would disobey the command of the Prophet (saw) and usurp the government. The cooperation of Ali (as) with Khulafa, which he himself have mentioned many times is so compassionate that leaves no room for doubt.

For example in the book al-Gharat al-Thaqafi Shi’i quotes Amir al-muminin Ali (as): “When the Prophet (saw) completed his mission, Allah took him from this world, peace and blessing of Allah be upon him, then the Muslims appointed two worthy men as his successors and those two leaders acted upon the book and the Sunnah and did not deviant from the Sunnah and ways of the Prophet (saw). Then Allah took their souls. May Allah have mercy on them.”

– If Amir al-Muminin was divinely appointed after the Prophet (saw), would his courage stop him to unleash his sword to implement the order and justice of Allah? Was it not expected from the gate of knowledge to explain the truth in time when needed?

…and the article continues

`Umar begins distributing the wealth starting with Ahlul-Bayt

al-Salamu `Aleykum,

This is not a rare narration, there’s a lot of chains and texts for this Khabar. We start with two authentic ones then we mention others.

From Musannaf ibn abi Shaybah:

[Zayd bin al-Hubab told us (Thiqah Imam), al-Qassim bin Ma`n told us (Thiqah Imam Kufi), from Ja`far (al-Sadiq), from his father, that when `Umar wanted to distribute among the people, and he was the best of them in opinion, they said: “Begin with yourself.” So he said: “No, I begin with those closest to the Prophet (saw).” So he distributed to al-`Abbas then to `Ali the Khums and continued to do so for every tribe until he ended with bani `Adi bin Ka`b.]

[Waki` told us (Thiqah Imam), Suffiyan told us (Thiqah Imam), from Ja`far, from his father, that he said: When `Umar was establishing the Diwans, he consulted the people. He asked: “With whom do I begin?” They said: “Begin with yourself?” He said: “No, but I shall begin with those closest to the Prophet (saw).” So he began with them.]

[Muhammad bin `Abdullah al-Asadi told us, Hibban told us, from Mujalid, from al-Sha`bi, that they brought `Umar seven million from Jalula’, so he ordered their distribution and consulted. `Abdul-Rahman bin `Awf said: “Start with yourself, you have the most right.” He replied: “No, I shall begin with those closest to the Prophet (saw), those who witnessed Badr until I end with myself.” So he ordered that `Ali receive five thousand, then to bani Hashim, those of them that witnessed Badr, then to their servants, then allies, and he kept on going until his own turn.]

From al-Amwal lil-Qassim bin Salam:

[He said: And I was told from `Abd Wahb bin `Abdul-Majeed al-Thaqafi, from Ja`far bin Muhammad, from his father, that `Umar followed `Ali by his sons al-Hasan and al-Husayn giving them five thousand. And Nu`aym bin Hammad (Imam Saduq) told me, from `Abdul-`Aziz bin Muhammad al-Darawardi (ٌHasan al-Hadith) from Ja`far bin Muhammad, from his father, that `Umar indeed did so with al-Hasan and al-Husayn.]

Additional reports from al-Amwal li ibn Zinjawayh:

al-Baqir & Jafar Sadiq about Abubakr and Omar

Salim bin Abi Hafsa said: I asked Aba Jafar and his son Jafar about Abubakr and Omar. He said: O Salim, befriend them and dissociate yourself from their enemies as they were the two Imams of guidance. Then Jafar said: O Salim! does anyone abuses his grandfather? Abubakr is my grandfather. May I don’t get the intercession of Mohammad (saw) on the day of judgement if I don’t love them and if I don’t dissociate myself from their enemies. [Isnad Hasan]

Ali about Uthman: There is nothing between us except goodness

Text of Hadith:

[Juray ibn Kulayb said: I saw that `Ali was ordering something and `Uthman was prohibiting from it. So I said to `Ali : “There is something wrong between you both.” He replied : “There is nothing between us apart from good, but the better one of us is the one who is more obedient to this religion.”

In another narration the matter being prohibited is the Mut`ah, meaning of Hajj.]

Shia Scholar says no one criticized the lineage of Abu Bakr because Imams are from his progeny

Shia scholar Nimatullah Jazairi says:

“As for not criticizing him in a harmful way, as we will see in the lineage of his likes, maybe it is because the Imams (as) are from his (Abu Bakr’s) progeny.”

Ali: Abubakr used to surpass us in good deeds

Salam `Aleykum,

Hadith from Mustadrak al-Hakim 3/358, al-Dhahabi said “Sahih” in al-Talkhees:

[Abu Bakr bin Ishaq al-Faqih told us, Ahmad bin Salamah told us, Ishaq bin Ibrahim told us, Jarir told us, from `Abdullah bin Yaazid al-Sahbani, from Kumayl bin Ziyad, from `Ali may Allah be pleased with him that he said: I was with the Prophet (SAWS) and with him was Abu Bakr may Allah be pleased with him and whoever Allah willed from his companions, so we passed by `Abdullah ibn Mas`oud while he prayed, the Prophet (SAWS) asked: “Who is this?”, they replied: “`Abdullah ibn Mas`oud.” He (SAWS) said: “`Abdullah recites the Qur’an as it was revealed.”
`Abdullah praised his Lord a beautiful praise and thanked him, then he supplicated to him in the best way a slave can supplicate to his Lord, then he said: “O Lord, I ask you for faith that will not subside, and for ever lasting blessings, and to be in the company of Muhammad peace be upon him and his family in the highest of eternal heavens.”
The Prophet (SAWS) used to say: “Ask and you shall be given, ask and you shall be given!” twice, so I left quickly to deliver the good news (to ibn Mas`oud), but I found that Abu Bakr beat me to it and he used to surpass us in good deeds.]

Some Benefits:

1- Early Rafidhah like Kumayl ibn Ziyad would narrate the virtues of the companions and did not believe in Imamah.
2- Abu Bakr (ra) was from the closest companions of the Prophet (SAWS).
3- `Abdullah (ra) would recite the Qur’an with the purest of letters.
4- `Abdullah (ra) was praised for his worship and devotion.
5- The Prophet (SAWS) asked Allah to grant Ibn Mas`oud (ra) what he wished.
6- `Ali (ra) praised Abu Bakr (ra) and said that he would surpass them all in doing the good deeds.
and others…

`Ali (ra) distributed the Khums the same way Abu Bakr (ra) and `Umar (ra) did

al-Salamu `Aleykum,

How did `Ali ibn abi Talib (ra) distribute the Khums during his Khilafah?

We have two narrations from Mustadrak al-Hakim al-Naysapuri regarding the topic. The Matn of both is similar but the Sanad differs so I will translate one Matn and go through both Isnads.

Text of Hadith:

[`Abdul-Rahman bin abi Layla said: I heard `Ali may Allah be pleased with him say: “The Prophet (SAWS) charged me with spending the Khums of the Khums, so I spend it the same way it was spent during the days of the messenger (SAWS) and Abu Bakr and `Umar may Allah be pleased with them.”]

Sheikh Abu Bakr bin Ishaq told us, Ya`qoub bin Yusuf al-Qazwini told us, Muhammad bin Sa`eed bin Sabiq told us, abu Ja`far al-Razi told us, from Mutraf, from `Abdul-Rahman bin abi Layla: (and he mentions it…)

al-Hakim said Sahih and al-Dhahabi agreed.

al-Hakim said Sahih and al-Dhahabi said on the condition of Bukhari and Muslim.

Studying the narrators:

Currently undergoing study…

1- Sheikh Abu Bakr bin Ishaq:

al-Dhahabi in Siyar al-A`lam 15/487 described him as:

`Ali (ra) passing a judgement on `Umar (ra) during his Khilafah

Written by Hani
Posted by 13S2010

al-Salamu `Aleykum,

While writing my new article:

“Is `Umar bin al-Khattab (ra) an oppressive dictator?”

I dived into books of Hadith and found some interesting narrations about `Umar’s (ra) treatment of his subjects and advisers, I will post an interesting one here for the benefit, I want to see how the most ignorant of people (i.e Shia) explain this one:

`Abdul-Razzaq, from Ma`mar, from Matar al-Warraq, and others, from al-Hasan, that he said: `Umar sent after a promiscuous woman who used to receive men, he did not accept this. So when they got to her place, they called on her: “Come answer to `Umar!” She said: “Woe to me! What have I done to `Umar!?” And while on her way, she was painful, and entered a house and dropped her child, so he cried twice then died.
`Umar consulted the companions of the Prophet (SAWS), and some of them said to him: “You are not deserving of punishment, your duty is only to discipline them as the ruler.” but `Ali was silent, so `Umar approached him and asked: “What is your opinion?”  `Ali replied: “If this is their opinion then they erred, and if they said this to you knowing that you wanted to hear it, then they did not give you sound advice. I see that you must pay the blood money(Diyyah) for him, because you scared her and she dropped her child as a result.” so he ordered `Ali to distribute the money between Quraysh because he was wrong.

Source: Musannaf Abdul-Razzaq.

From what al-Hafiz abu `Abdullah granted me the Ijazah to narrate, is that abu al-Walid al-Faqih told them, he said: al-Masirjisiy abu al-`Abbas told  us, Shayban told us, Sallam told us, he said: I heard al-Hasan say: That it had reached `Umar that a promiscuous woman was receiving men, so he sent her a messenger, and the messenger said to her: “Come answer to Ameer al-Mu’mineen!” So she got scared and it affected her womb, and her child moved, and when she left she suddenly dropped her fetus.
`Umar was informed of this he sent after the emigrants and told them her story, he asked: “What do you think?” they said: “We see no fault on you O Ameer  al-Mu’mineen, your job is only to discipline and teach.” and `Ali was among the folks and he was silent. `Umar said: “O abu al-Hasan, what do you think?” `Ali replied: “I say: if they spoke only what you desired to hear, then they are sinful, and if they had thought and reached this opinion, then they are wrong. O Ameer al-Mu’mineen, I see that you must pay the blood money(Diyyah).” `Umar said: “You speak truth! Go and divide it among your folks.”

Source: Sunan al-Bayhaqi al-Kubra.

Conclusions:

From this one narration, the one with intellect can conclude many things, such as:

1-`Umar bin al-Khattab (ra) took responsibility for his own mistakes.

2-`Umar bin al-Khattab (ra) did not care about his own image and prestige, he would admit his mistake in public.

3-`Umar bin al-Khattab (ra) took the decision which is against his own interest and well-being simply because he saw it was the truth.

4-`Umar bin al-Khattab (ra) consulted and was no dictator.

5-`Umar bin al-Khattab (ra) greatly respected the opinion of `Ali bin abi Talib (ra) and often consulted him and agreed with him.

6-`Umar bin al-Khattab (ra) would trust `Ali bin abi Talib (ra) with official tasks, such as receiving the money and dividing it equitably among the people.

7-`Ali bin abi Talib (ra) was not oppressed during the rule of `Umar bin al-Khattab (ra) nor was he prevented from stating his opinions.

8-`Ali bin abi Talib (ra) acknowledges the legitimacy of the Khilafah of `Umar bin al-Khattab (ra) by addressing him as “Ameer al-Mu’mineen”.

9-`Ali bin abi Talib (ra) was not afraid of speaking the truth during the Khilafah of `Umar bin al-Khattab (ra) in his presence.

And more…

Ja`far Sadiq says `Ali (ra) sent SALAT upon `Umar (ra)

al-Salamu `Aleykum,

[Ahmad bin Muhammad abu Ja`far al-`Atiqi said: abu al-Hasan al-Daraqutni `Ali bin `Umar al-Hafiz al-Baghdadi told us, abu Hamid Muhammad bin Haroun al-Hadrami told us, Ya`qoub bin Ibrahim al-Dawraqi told us, Suffiyan ibn `Uyaynah told us, from Ja`far bin Muhammad, from his father Muhammad bin `Ali, from Jabir ibn `Abdullah al-Ansari that he said: `Ali told `Umar bin al-Khattab while he was on his death-bed: “Salla-Allahu `Alayka, and he made Du`a for him.” Suffiyan said: They said to Ja`far: “Isn’t it said that one cannot send Salat except on the Prophet (SAWS)?” he replied: “This is how I heard it.”]
