Misconceptions about the Jahiliya Period of Omar

Misconceptions about the pre-Islamic or Jahiliya period (days of ignorance) of Omar ibn al-Khattāb (رضی الله عنه)

Alsalam alaykum,

I recently realized that there are two really famous tales about Omar in the time of his jahiliya. These stories have been told to me when I was much younger and I just recently realized that they are not built upon any narrations. The first is that he killed his daughter by burying her alive and the second is that he worshiped an idol made out of dates. These narrations cannot be found in any of the reliable books of hadith or history and is therefore false.

  1. Salam alaykum,

Even if it were true, what difference would it make once his (Radhia Allahu Anhu) Islam were establilshed?
