Did Umar(ra) really punished his son Abu Shahma(rah)

Shia try to show that Umar(ra) was very cruel in his nature, even he tortured his son abu shahma(rah) & due to this he died!

Shia argument:

‘Umar Ibn Khattab’s son Abu Shahma drank alcohol and he was punished by the governor with lashhes but it was not carried out in public. So ‘Umar Ibn Khattab ordered his son to come back to madina and it was carried out in public and he died.

First of all; The translation he provided appears to be of a Fabrication, a very poor translation, or a poor translation of a Fabrication.

The basis of the story can be found in Musanaf Abdulrazaq with an authentic chain (as Ibn Hajar said).

May Allah be pleased with Umar and his son Abdulrahman (أبا شحمة).

Here is the narration in Arabic from the Musanaf of Abdulrazaq [Rahimahu Allah]:

Ibn Hajar Rahimahu Allah said in Al-Isabah:

There is a brief discussion in the Arabic Forum about this narration with several benefits.

Just quick comments:

[1] There is no indication that Abdulrahman [May Allah be pleased with him] died from the beating of Umar [May Allah be pleased with him] to him, rather the opposite is clear from the words of Ibn Umar [May Allah be pleased with him] who attended the incident, who said: “and he did not die from the beating of Umar”.

[2] There is nothing that indicates that he intentionally consumed alcohol, since the Arabic mentions that he said to his brother: “we became drunk from a drink we consumed”. Ibn Al-Jawzi [Rahimahu Allah] says: “It won’t be surprising if he had drank what he drank from a Ta’weel, and got drunk against his will …” [Arabic multaqa link].

[3] The repunishment of Umar, was not a re-carrying out of the Haad otherwise he would have sent for both Abdulrahman and ‘Uqbah [May Allah be pleased with them] … but the narration says he sent for Abdulrahman.

[4] The narration says that Umar [May Allah be pleased with him] punished his son because of his relation to him. Ibn Al-Jawzi [Rahimahu Allah] also affirms that this second punishment was just a punsihment of a father to his son, not a Haad.

[5] There is nothing in the narration that says the Haad was not carried out in public, rather it says that the head shaving was the one which was not carried out in public. Also there is nothing in the narration that says that the beating of Umar was carried out in public … from this narration at least.
